National Service Scheme (NSS)
- National Service Scheme (NSS), a public service program sponsored by the Govt. of India, an initiative of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports which encourages school and college students to interact and know the community around them, understand their problems and give an effort towards their solution.
- The scheme was launched by the then Union Education Minister V.K.R.V. Rao in the year 1969, the birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi, in 37 universities involving 40000 students.
- National Service Scheme was started in AIGS in the year 2007.
Objectives
- Understand the community in which they work
- Understand themselves in relation to their community
- Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process
- Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
- Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems
- Develop competence required for group living and sharing of responsibilities
- Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude
- Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters
- Practice national integration and social harmony.
NSS Pledge
“I solemnly to work with dedication, serve and strengthen freedom and integrity of the nation. I further affirm that I shall never resort to violence and that all differences and disputes relating to the religion, language, region or political or economic graveness shall be settled by peaceful and constitutional manner.”
Who can be a NSS Volunteer?
- The NSS volunteer, who is a college/+2 level student is the main beneficiary of the programme. The students from foreign countries studying in Indian universities can also join NSS so that they may share the experiences of national reconstruction and community work.
- By way of development of his/her perception about the community, his/her skill to perform certain jobs, and develop quality of a leader, organiser, and development of his/her personality as a whole.
- NSS programme aims to make NSS student youth better citizens through
- “Development of the personality through Community Service”
Classification of NSS Programme
NSS activities have been divided in two major groups.
(I) Regular NSS Activity: Under this, students undertake various programmes in the adopted villages, college/school campuses and urban slums during weekends or after college hours
(II) Special Camping Programme: Under this, camps of 7 days duration are organised in adopted villages or urban slums during vacations with some
specific projects by involving local communities. 50% NSS volunteers are expected to participate in these camps.
