UBA - History

The Unnat Bharat Abhiyan initiative originated from a dedicated group of faculty members at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, who have long been engaged in the fields of rural development and appropriate technology. The concept was refined through extensive consultations with representatives from various technical institutions, Rural Technology Action Group (RuTAG) coordinators, voluntary organizations, and government agencies involved in rural development. These discussions took place during a national workshop held at IIT Delhi in September 2014, which was sponsored by the Council for the Advancement of People’s Action and Rural Technology (CAPART), a part of the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. The program was officially launched by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) in the presence of the President of India on November 11, 2014.

AIGS joined the UBA network in September 2018, committing itself to the holistic development of rural communities by leveraging the institution’s academic, research, and human resources. Through this initiative, the college adopted five villages in Bengaluru Rural District—Alur, Hesaraghatta, Sasiveghatta, Kasagattapura, and Chikkabanavara. These villages were selected after detailed need assessments and focused group discussions, ensuring that interventions respond directly to the unique requirements of each community.
